Writing for the sake of writing

Is writing for the sake of writing fair to the written piece?

I ask that as I stare at the clock, hoping to write a post before midnight so I can say I actually got a post written today. Is it fair to write for that reason alone?

I’m a big fan of writing when it moves you. Let the words flow. Tell your story. Put your thoughts on paper. Don’t force it. It’ll come.

However, if I did that, there would be days on end that I wouldn’t blog at all. I’m either too busy or inspiration just doesn’t exist. A lack of inspiration can span upwards of a week (or more!). Not even writing prompts can get me motivated to write when I’m just not feeling it.

I’m battling that tonight. So I sit here wondering… do I write for the sake of writing? Or do I just let the day go? I, obviously, opted to write… because sometimes you just have to make it happen. Much like those days you just don’t want to get out of bed, you have to just do it. The reward of the day makes it worth it.

The reward of writing in general — something I do deeply enjoy doing — is worth it.

  1. I felt that way too about writing only when I felt inspired. That’s also why I joined some writing groups, using their prompts to kick start my brain. Some weeks i write fiction, some times it’s more true life. Overall there have been few days that I’ve not been able to write something. There is also days when I basically post only photos.

    1. I like photo only posts… I just fear I might go to doing those too much! I have wanted to try to find a rhythm to my weekly posts. Like I know every Sunday is weekly winners. Perhaps each day have a theme. I just can’t quite decide what I want to do for sure with that. But perhaps that would help keep me inspired…

  2. I write when the mood strikes. I can’t just sit at my blog and stare at the cursor, it stresses me out and makes me panic and then it’s not FUN to me, but blogging should be fun, writing should be fun, even if you’re writing something that’s hard or that hurts at first. I really enjoy your blog- I don’t comment as much as I should but I really enjoy what you write, your content and the pics that you share!

    1. Thank you!! I appreciate you’re readying and commenting when you do. I’m terrible about leaving comments myself, but I am trying to do better.

I think I need write when i feel like writing. Like right now, I am in the mood to write. So I am going with it and I’m just writing several posts to post through the week. Why hold back now and wait? When I go to write in two days I might be doing that stare at the cursor thing… I need to write when I want and not pressure myself when I don’t. It’ll help keep writing fun…

  3. I think writing for the sake of writing is good sometimes, just to keep up the habit. However, if you’re writing for the sake of writing 7 days a week, something’s gotta give. LOL If you need fodder for a blog, I’d love your take on the whole Catholic insurance contraception dealie going on in the news.
