Fool me once…

wpid-wp-1427915862158.pngI am a terrible liar. I am! As such, April Fools Day drives me batty.  I don’t like it. At all. I purposely flew back to Texas yesterday to avoid stupid pranks while traveling.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I like a good clean prank. I think we take life way too seriously at times, and a good prank can bring about laughter and an escape from stress. A well placed plastic spider, or a great rubber snake can get the heart started and end with laughter.  A fun at work prank (albeit on “old” one) is changing someone’s screensaver to turn on after 30 seconds of non-use. Parking right beside a friend’s drivers side door so they can’t get in their car.

Some pranks, though, do just the opposite. There’s the saying that it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt, and that saying is ten times more poignant on a day like April Fools Day.  Any prank that causes physical harm is not okay. Any prank that causes emotional harm is not okay. Faking death. Faking pregnancy. Making some structure (even just a chair!) unsafe is not okay.

To me, it shouldn’t be that hard to know the difference between okay and not okay. That line should just inherently be known. But, it isn’t. Crossing that line comes easily to many. And it’s for that reason that I opt out of April Fools Day.  Come find me when the insanity is over.
