Blood Moon Eclipse

Blood Moon Eclipse

Sometimes, things can’t be captured fully in photo form. That is a hard thing for a photographer to admit. But tonight… tonight was one of those times.

The night the moon turned red. A blood moon.

I always think of the movie Practical Magic when I hear of a blood moon, of as they said, “Blood on the moon.” They didn’t have to explain it signified danger ahead.

I don’t fear a blood moon, though. I view it with humbling wonder. It was totally worth sitting out in the middle of my parents yard with the dog, bundled up and wrapped in a blanket to watch this occur. To see the moon slowly fade, then turn that deep blood maroon. Stunning.

I didn’t realize, going into tonight, that this is the first of four times this will occur in the next year and a half. It will next occur on October 8th, then again April 5, 2015, and then again September 28, 2015. Doing my homework, this phenomenon, while rare, did occur before… in 1909-10, 1927-28, 1949-50, 1967-68, 1985-86, and 2003-04.

Interesting, no?

No matter how often it happens, though, its still an awe inspiring thing to watch. For me, its the whole experience. The dogs barking in the distance. The light wind. Wrapping up in a blanket, camera in-hand. Some people think a blood moon signals the end of the world… and if it does, well, at least the world ended while I was living and experiencing the moment. Why fear such a thing? Embrace it. Be thankful for it. I say God is the best artist, and nature the most amazing canvas. Tonight was just an example of that fact, and I’m so glad I took the time to experience it.

Forget March Madness… April is here!

April 5th, 2014 1 comment

March was crazy.

It had travel…

 15/47: Luggage

Concerts…

 10/47: Roots & Boots

Events near and dear to my heart…

11/47: 2014 Music City Muscle Walk

Dental appointments…

21/47: Sedative

A fantastic photoshoot…

18/47: Family photoshoot

And the arrival of Spring and its allergies…

26/47: Blooming

But April will be far crazier.

I literally — LITERALLY — have only 3 days this entire month that don’t have something scheduled in them. Be it work, events, get-togethers, meetings, photoshoots… there is something every day except three. I’m tired just thinking about it! Tired, but also exhilarated.

I’ll sleep in May.

Yesterday was #birthday33

November 11th, 2013 2 comments

So, yesterday I turned 33. Since I consider 3 my lucky number, I’m going to say 33 will be my most lucky year. How’s that sound to everyone?

The day started a little bumpy, simply due to trying to figure out when my husband would be in off the road, and within that when I would get to sleep. I ended up getting 3 hours of sleep before doing a photoshoot that just made for a wonderful way to spend the day.

Over the last few years, especially since I started bartending and even more since we moved so close to downtown Nashville, I’ve become more and more extroverted. I still think I’m an introvert at heart, but I find myself craving and enjoying the company of others more than ever before these days. So to spend the day with my husband taking photos of a beautiful family and then having dinner with friends (and being sung to for the first time in a restaurant!) just made for a fantastic way to spend my birthday. I’m so thankful for how it all went, and I sit here feeling very content.

Four of the last five years, I’ve done a “Project 365″ starting on my birthday. It’s a fun way to advance my photography skills, but also to look back over the last year of life.

With how much I am now photographing professionally, I’m going to take a P365 break for this year. I “phoned it in” much of the last year anyway, so I think I need to give that little project a break. Nonetheless… click here for a little look back at the last year of my life in photos.

Photo Share: October 1 – 31

photosharebuttonPhoto Share is my personal replacement for Weekly Winners, since that link exchange is no longer happening. It’s just my own challenge to take great photos through the week month, as it gives me a venue to share some of them on this blog. Consider it my own little P.S. on the week month before.

Photos this week taken with my Sony DSLR A230 or Canon EOS Rebel T3 or Nikon CoolPix L20. Edited using Lightroom 3… or using my Droid Razr and Instagram. You can probably figure out which is which.
